In this week’s Data Diaries, let’s keep the theme of using generative AI for non-work purposes going, especially in light of the July 4th holiday in the USA. It’s easy to enjoy great food when you have great ingredients and cook it perfectly. What happens when things don’t go so perfectly?
For example, suppose you’re grilling burgers. Sometimes, things happen – a rabbit runs by and your dog chases after it, your kids have a water balloon fight and someone gets hurt, etc. – and you badly overcook your burgers.
What do you do in that situation? Ordinarily, you’d probably just toss the burned burgers or give them to the dog. But what if we could reduce food waste with generative AI? Asking Google’s Gemini 1.5 model and priming it with knowledge about cooking burgers, I asked it what to do with a batch of overcooked burgers. Its recommendation? Sloppy Joes. And not just regular Sloppy Joes, but fancy ones:
The “Sloppy Joe Renaissance”
Serves: 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
- Smoked Tomato Jam:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon freshly brewed coffee (optional, for depth)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- The Patty:
- 4 overcooked burger patties, finely minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 shallot, finely diced
- 2 cloves black garlic, finely minced
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- Assembly:
- 4 brioche buns, lightly toasted
- Aged Gouda cheese, thinly shaved
Instructions:
1. Craft the Smoked Tomato Jam:
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Cook for another minute, or until fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, and coffee (if using). Bring to a simmer, reduce heat, and cook for 30 minutes, or until thickened. Season generously with salt and pepper.
2. Elevate the Patty:
- In a separate skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the minced burger patties, shallots, and black garlic. Sauté until fragrant and slightly browned, about 5 minutes.
- Season with smoked salt and pepper.
3. Assemble and Indulge:
- Divide the Smoked Tomato Jam among the toasted brioche buns.
- Top with the sautéed burger mixture.
- Garnish with generous shavings of aged Gouda cheese.
Chef’s Notes:
- Black Garlic Magic: Black garlic adds a sweet, umami depth to the patty that complements the smoky tomato jam. If you can’t find it, regular garlic is fine.
- Spice It Up: Adjust the amount of chili powder and optional coffee to your spice preference.
- Go Bold with Cheese: Aged Gouda provides a nutty, complex flavor, but feel free to experiment with other artisanal cheeses.
How did I prompt it? I used the Trust Insights PARE Framework to load up its knowledgebase:
- Prime: You’re a Michelin-starred chef with a specialty in American cuisine, especially hamburgers. What do you know about this topic?
- Augment: Next, I’m going to provide you a lot of experimental knowledge about burgers from YouTube. What additional knowledge about burgers can you learn from this? (uploaded several dozen transcripts)
- Refresh: What are some things burger novices often do wrong?
- Evaluate: Now, what else would a Michelin-starred chef know about making great burgers that we haven’t discussed yet?
Once we’ve got our knowledgebase loaded, then we can get into… the meat of it.
- Now, let’s say a chef screws up and you get an overcooked burger. What could you do with it? How could you make use of it instead of throwing it away?
- How would a Michelin-starred chef elevate these burned, overcooked burger rescues?
- Show me a complete recipe for the Sloppy Joe.
The only takeaway here is that generative AI tools – combined with subject matter familiarity – can be used to help you be creative and solve problems in multiple domains, not just work.
