Okay, let’s get real for a minute. We’ve all been there – staring at a spreadsheet of demographics, trying to squeeze insights out of dry data points like age ranges and zip codes. It’s a bit like trying to predict the weather by looking at a single blade of grass.

Demographics tell you who your customers are, but they rarely reveal the why behind their actions.

Why do they choose one brand over another?
Why do certain messages resonate while others fall flat?

To unlock those secrets, we need to dig deeper, into the realm of psychographics.

Think of it this way: demographics are like the outline of a puzzle, while psychographics are the colorful pieces that bring the picture to life. They paint a vibrant portrait of your ideal customer’s inner world – their motivations, their anxieties, their aspirations.

• Values: What are their core beliefs? What’s important to them? (Sustainability, ethical sourcing, convenience?)
• Fears: What keeps them up at night? What are they trying to avoid? (Financial insecurity, missing out, making the wrong decision?)
• Aspirations: What are their goals and dreams? What future are they striving to create? (Career success, personal fulfillment, making a difference?)
• Pain Points: What problems are they desperately seeking solutions for? Where are they feeling stuck or frustrated?

Here’s a real-world example from Trust Insights’ backyard: a local car dealership. We examined the generic sales scripts that people often use in car sales and asked, how could using an ICP improve these? With the right ingredients – good data and a solid psychographic ICP – it’s straightforward to take a sales script from good to great. Instead of generic platitudes, this dealership’s sales scripts narrowed down exactly what a buyer would be interested in.

Take a look at the starting script, which was ineffective:

There’s such a lack of specificity here, nothing that would set apart this sales professional from any other at their dealership, or any other dealership.

We used generative AI to ingest data about this particular vehicle and the ICP for this specific vehicle (also created with generative AI), and had generative AI tailor the script to the ICP.
